Prior Learning Assessment

Northwest Community College recognizes that knowledge and skills are acquired through a variety of learning, life and work experiences. Opportunities for flexible assessment and recognition of the knowledge and skills gained through prior learning will be offered to learners wishing to acquire credit in a course or program at NWCC. Students admitted to NWCC may request formal recognition for prior learning through the Registrar’s Office and PLA costs 50% of the regular tuition cost for the course credit is be requested for.

The faculty assessor will determine the appropriate instrument to evaluate if competencies are met.

Prior Learning may be assessed through a variety of ways and are not limited to:

  •   Written challenge examinations or course examinations
  •   Oral assessment and/or interview
  •   Performance tests and/or demonstrations in laboratory (simulation/role play)
  •   Standardized tests
  •   Projects/assignments
  •   Portfolio Assessment

Students must complete 25% of the courses in the credential through NWCC to meet graduate requirements. Each program reserves the right to limit the number of courses in a program eligible for PLA

Credits earned through PLA will be recorded as such on the student’s transcripts, and are included in residency for credential.

For more details on PLA, contact an Educational Advisor or the coordinator of the appropriate program. You can also refer to the PLA policy
